After some very average waterfront dining experiences in New Plymouth I wasn't expecting much - but what a pleasant surprise!
The setting on a hot Summer's day is spectacular, but rather than relying on the view to pull customers in and serving up mediocre dishes Gusto hits the mark with everything that matters - service, setting and (of course) food.
The menu offers something for everyone - having just climbed Mt Taranaki I felt like a protein overload and went for the omelette - it was huge, generously filled with feta and salmon, and wonderfully light and fluffy. Others at the table enjoyed battered Gurnard and fish cakes, all of which disappeared very quickly. Even the kid's menu was a pleasant surprise - rather than the usual pile of deep fried greasiness with no redeeming qualities, litte fulla's fish came with a decent amount of salad. Nice!
Our waitress was great - Kim was attentive but never intrusive, great with the 7 year old, and a true professional. All in all a really enjoyable experience, and great value too - 5 mains, 1 dessert and a glass of wine for $119.

Loved our dinner last night. We both had versions of chicken - which were moist and tasty. The licorice icecream dessert was a great experience! Friendly service made for a casual but comfortable experience! Thank you!

All of our families and guests were completely blown away by the stunning venue. The restaurant by day transformed into a gorgeous venue with a private beach, complemented by the port lights at night. The service was excellent and the food was just sensational!

 

A special mention to Kate who went above and beyond her duties and almost was our personal wedding planner. Nothing was an issue and she had some awesome advice which made everything run so smoothly on the day.

 

We received an overwhelming response from our guests saying it was the best wedding they have ever attended and its many thanks to the team at Gusto. The staff were professional, fun, friendly and we are truly grateful; it was a day and night we will always remember!

The best place in New Plymouth for mums and bubs. So much space for prams, a change table and breast feeding friendly. Thank you. Oh and the food is wonderful.

Four of us gathered to celebrate my daughter's 27th birthday. Once again the service was great; friendly and attentive, not intrusive. The food was excellent; tasty and generous. The setting superb not only the outlook but spaces between tables, room to move, room for the buggy and a general calm. Best place in town in our opinion. Thanks to all the workers.

My husband works in New Plymouth for a few days each month. After asking at his hotel if there were any beachfront cafes in New Plymouth (they didn't know of any !) he discovered Gusto one day. We went there for lunch, it was a lovely setting and building. We were concerned at the long wait for his omelette but when it arrived we could see why  it had actually been baked and was huge! He struggled to eat half and took the other half with him for dinner as he was working night shift. We will definitely go here again would just suggest a little fine tuning on their coffee ( I am a barista and cafe owner of five years in a busy beach resort town ) and do some advertising so out of towners know you are there!

It was a wonderful experience for my wife and I and I have voted on Taranaki MUST eats and drinks as the very best cafe in Taranaki. The staff are so kind and friendly and its a lovely location to enjoy a wonderfull meal.

THANK YOU to all the wonderful staff at Gusto New Plymouth. We had booked for my Dad's 80th birthday lunch with around 29 guests that came to celebrate this special occasion, the staff especially Kim, the chef's (Great meals!) & bar stewards were absolutely fantastic with everything from a very warm welcome to making sure all our needs were catered for, the food was excellent well presented and enjoyed by all. What an awesome team of lovely people, well done GUSTO'S NEW PLYMOUTH. Once again thank you to all of you, something we will always treasure. Will we be back? You bet. The Fox family.
